Doll Show Prep

Time to start prepping for my upcoming doll shows.

A question! Does anyone read the captions? I always caption my videos for several reasons. One, I'm a bit of a low talker and a mumbler. Two, I have sinus issues, so often times my voice is croakish. Three, when watching movies and such myself, I prefer to read rather than hear people speak. (Weirdo, I know.) And four, not everyone is hearing abled. For those reasons, and the fact that the auto captions on YouTube were awful, I did the captions myself.

However, the other day I was watching something and the YouTube captions were fairly on point so I thought, "Oh hey, they fixed them." Then I watched something else and the captions were crap again, so who knows.

Anyway, I just wondered if I should keep captioning or do away with them. Opinions welcomed.

  1. I read the captions, maybe because I also often prefer reading to the spoken word myself. Captions might also be useful for someone for whom English is not the first language. I know it is easier for me to read the foreign languages I know than to understand when someone is speaking them.

    1. Barb that is too true about foreign languages. My comprehension of Spanish is much better in written form than in hearing it spoken.

  2. I listen instead of reading captions because some of them are way off so they're confusing and also, I prefer to see what's going on and reading while looking at the video splits my focus.

    1. Maricha, at first I didn't speak in my videos and only added voice when I was demonstrating something. I knew no one had time to read AND watch what I was doing.

  3. I like the captions because depending on where I am and what device I am on, I may not always have audio.

    1. Another vote for captions! Thanks, Just My Dolls.

  4. I can't help but reading the captions. If I'm watching a TV show in english with subtitles in spanish, I can't avoid reading them, even if I don't need them. However, sometimes the caption helps me understand what people are saying, as I'm not a native english speaker. What's the upcoming show going to be about? Any hints?

    1. Monster I watch a lot of Korean and Asian shows and I absolutely need the captions because although I understand a few phrases by ear, I've never studied the languages so I would be lost without captions.

The show is a regular doll show and sale but it's not like a fancy, days long convention. I might do a convention this year depending how much I make at the regular one day shows.

  5. I like to have captions on because I have some difficulties with understanding spoken words sometimes, even though I hear just fine. I love that you caption your videos and it has inspired me to try to fix my own!

    1. Thanks for your input, Erin O! I will definitely be keeping the captions.

  6. I also read the caption first and then I will go back and look at the fine details of it.

    1. Hey, Georgia Girl! That's the opposite of how I view photo stories, lol. First I look at all the photos and then I go back and read the story.

  7. Oh my! I can't believe that doll 'as is' at TJ Maxx. Really? All those Minis are so cool and tempting.

What do you sell at the doll show?

    1. Hiya, Jaye! I really thought the ice cream minis were very well done. They had a lot of details and tiny bits on them.

This year I'm going small and will just be selling mini accessories. No dolls or toys.

  8. I like the captions. That way if I've got the radio on or I'm on the phone, I can still follow what's going on.

  9. I laughed at "Go big or go home. MUURICA!!" Reminds me of people celebrating the 4th of July.
The captions help me because English is not my first language and sometimes there are things I won't get right away the first time by listening, unless I read it too. But no captions is also fine.

    1. LOL, Oly. I've been to plenty of July 4th celebrations but no one has ever screamed 'Merica. I've been to other events where people chant USA, USA, USA! though.

  10. Look at all that cuteness at your Michael's! The miniatures selection at my Michael's sucks. I'm another fan of captions so please keep 'em.

    1. Jewell, Michaels actually had two separate miniature sections and the older section would be the suckier one, lol. I wouldn't necessarily say it sucks sucks, more that its quite rustic and not intended for fashion dolls. This newer section seems a bit more modern.

  11. Another good point, Kristina C. When I've been in relationships I've watched videos in the middle of the night while they were sleeping and I like captions better than dealing with headphones.

  12. I love the captions. It's relaxing to me to read while listening to you type, for some reason. Haha. Wow, the nude Barbie, so weird! I am enjoying these vlogs...it looks so sunny and warm there.

    1. Hi, Farrah Lily! It's usually quite sunny here. Cold is relative though and during our cold months I'm freezing but people from up north are wearing shorts and acting like it's a day at the beach.

  13. I like your errand videos, it's fun to see what's in stores.
I wonder what the story is behind that naked doll because you just know it has to be a doozy like they let a customer steal the clothes and leave.
Can't wait to see more of your doll show prep.

    1. Maricha, I remember back in the days of the Basics Barbies there were a rash of thefts were people would by those dolls, remove them from the box and then return the box to the store with a different doll in it, with the employees none the wiser.

But this doll was returned or found naked with not a single article inside the box and the store still decided to sell it. That's just ridiculous.

    2. At this point you'd think the store would just donate the doll and call it a day.

  14. Just saw your video, and yes I like the captions! Sometimes when it is just the voice you miss or misunderstand what was said.

I rarely find when I have coupons for anything other than food that I am able to use them!

It always looks like a you have great weather where you are! I love the animal signs! I could use them in my garden. When is your show? We don't have them this early in the year.(weather) I am thinking about doing a flea market to clean out some stuff. Any suggestions?
    Keep the videos coming!

    1. Hiya, Ms. Leo! Now that you say that, food coupons are the only ones I don't use. I tried being a coupon queen at one point like those ladies on TLC but man, was that a lot of work.

My first show is March 4th in Cocoa, FL. Next one will be May 6th near Orlando. I wanted to do Georgia Girls show in Atlanta, but two shows in one month is a bit much for me. I hope to do a convention in August but I'm not sure I can swing that.

A thousand years ago I used to do flea markets and the sales there were kinda dismal doll wise. But this was the early 90's so the audience may be different now.

  15. I do some auto-caption editing at work, and what I find is that the voice recognition software just works better with certain voices and speaking styles (I know the stereotype is that you have to have either a British RP accent or an American newsreader accent, but I find it has more to do with how people pace their words). So if you saw one that managed to be pretty pretty decent, I suspect (even though I don't think we use the same software that YouTube does) that it probably had more to do with the speaker than it did with recognition improvement.

    1. jSarie, you made me remember that when Youtube first started offering captions I watched this lady named Kimmaytube and people made fun of her because of how she spoke which was a tad stilted and quite monotone. People were forever calling her a robot. She said she spoke that way so that the captions would be better. I totally forgot about that!

  16. Keep the captions. Don't you hate it when you have that 50 - 60% off coupon and the one thing you would love to use it on is already on sale! I've lucked out the last few times and it didn't happen that way. Wow, your Michael's mini section is quite large. I may have to check out my Michael's soon. Looking forward to seeing the doll show setup. When is the show?

    1. Vanessa, Joanns always does that 50% off coupon trick and I fall for it every time. Luckily Michaels takes their coupons. Well, they won't take AC Moores 55% ones as the most they will take off is 50%.

The show is March 4th so I better get crackin'!

  17. Hello,
I have been interested in your blog for several months now; I appreciate your comments, advice, ideas and ... humor (I loved the article of the outdoor video shoot with the comments of people! I make pictures of dolls, but also pictures of animals, and I am Stupid questions and reflections that I hear .... and very enraged when someone comes screaming almost to ask a silly question while it was 45 minutes that I was hovering to wait for the exit of a beaver from his shelter !!!).
I did not dare to write to you because I am a Frenchman living in Canada, and my English is a little "light" ... but tonight I decided it was the day !!
So I say thank you for your blog, and continue for a long time for our pleasure (and your :-)
    Have a nice day.

    2. Guyloup, thank you so much for your comment! I know how frustrating Google Translator can be so I very much appreciate you making the effort.

I am not as prolific at posting as I once was and have mostly switched to video-blogging instead of my older photo posts. For some reason I thought videos would be faster, but they aren't really.

You made me laugh with your beaver story! I can imagine you laying in wait for that perfect shot and them someone comes up and scares the beaver away. Ah, how we suffer for our art.

Also thanks for sharing a link to your blog. I love your photos!

  19. Hi Muff. Always enjoy going shopping with you. Sometimes I look at the captions (when the audio is silent) and sometimes I don't. I think, however, it probably helps your international visitors who read English better than they hear it.
